Summer College and Employment Readiness Training Program
for Blind High School and College Students

The "Life 101" College and Employment Readiness program is an eight-to-ten-week training program to prepare college- and employment-bound high school and college students who are blind with skills and information to promote academic, employment, and social success during post-secondary education. Note taking, using readers, ordering books in alternative formats, the role of offices for students with disabilities, time-management, social interaction with fellow students, extensive career exploration, how to be comfortable with blindness, how to work with professors and employers, nutrition and physical fitness as a college student or member of the workforce will be addressed. In addition, core classes in improving skills related to blindness--Braille reading and writing, independent cane travel, home/dormitory management, including cooking, cleaning, and washing and labeling clothes, daily living skills, industrial arts, and adaptive technology--will all be taught.

We also have seminars twice a week where we discuss issues related to blindness and participate in activities such as rock climbing, shopping at the Mall of America, going to amusement parks, canoeing, visiting college campuses, and others. Our curriculum is designed to not only give students the skills they need to be successful in their post-secondary educational pursuits, but also to give them the confidence and belief in themselves they need to find and keep a job. We have a positive view of blindness. We know that if blind people are given training and opportunity, they can be successful in college, and live full and productive lives.

Eight to ten students will be selected to participate in the college readiness training program. All services are provided on a fee-for-service basis by funding from a state vocational rehabilitation agency or another funding source such as your educational institution, etc. We have worked with a number of individuals from various states to attend our Life 101 program. Under the Choice Provisions of the Federal Rehabilitation Act blind people can select BLIND Inc. as their preferred center from which to receive training in alternative skills of blindness. You may contact BLIND Inc. for information on how this process works. these fees include all costs related to the program--food, laundry, and local transportation.
