Our TEAMS Program will be offered on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from October through May (excluding holiday periods when the center is closed). This program is administered by qualified BLIND, Inc. instructional staff. Students will be provided with individualized training to instill the skills needed to determine and achieve their personal, scholastic and vocational goals.

Students regularly attending the BLIND, Inc. TEAMS Program will:

  • Learn skills needed to live independently
  • Increase self-confidence
  • Improve travel skills using a long-white cane
  • Use public transportation to get to where they want to go
  • Work with state of the art technology
  • Socialize with blind and low vision peers
  • Network with successful blind adults
  • Participate in social and recreational activities
  • Enhance communication skills
  • Improve study skills
  • Visit post-secondary institutions
  • Explore careers and practice interviews
  • Produce a resume
  • Participate in volunteer and or employment experiences
  • Have fun with new and old friends.

TEAM Exploration will consist of high school students who will learn the skills and confidence to build the foundation needed to become more independent and find and keep a job. More experienced high school students, (at least 16 years and older) will join TEAM Employment to put those skills to practice by volunteering in the community, and obtaining a part-time job while participating in other real-life, age appropriate experiences. We will also host Training Camps, where students will participate in overnight activities designed to develop skills needed to transition from high school to adulthood. Students will also be assigned a coach, (mentor), who is a positive, successful blind adult role-model. Coaches will connect with students on a weekly basis via phone, email, text, Skype, etc. They will also provide direct mentoring during monthly face to face activities. Parents/guardians will be an integral part of the program, this includes participating in a portion of our Saturday sessions. They will have access to parent-specific chat rooms, email lists, networking opportunities, training sessions, and more. Parents/guardians will also have a chance to dialog with staff regarding regular updates on their child’s progress throughout the program. The program will also include social and recreational activities!

The program, in partnership with the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota (NFB of MN), will run from October 2016 through June 2017 at no cost to the participants or their families. We will meet at BLIND, Inc. twice a month. As the child’s first teacher, parents/guardians will partner with our staff to assist each student to optimize his/her independence. We will also work with families to ensure students have transportation to and from the program.

Note: The program will not be in session on Thanksgiving or during the last two weeks in December. BLIND, Inc. reserves the right to adjust program dates and times in order to better meet the needs of the students and families who are receiving or are interested in receiving transition services.
